Full Description
{1} 60, 63 and 64 High Street. The period when the building started is uncertain. In its earliest form it was a large two roomed cottage with a gable entry adjacent to the hall fireplace. The first floor was lit by dormer windows just above eaves level and the thrust of the trusses was taken by two buttresses along the front wall. There was very little dating evidence for this phase and a tentative suggestion of the late 16th or early 17th century is put forward.
The second phase can be more readily dated as an extension to the south east including the construction of a through passage. It is doubtful whether this form of construction persisted through to the 18th century. This phase provided the cottage with a kitchen and an additional first floor room. The paving of the through passage of this extension included a section of worn gravestone with the inscription "such is the kingdom of Heaven". This, however, is probably of much later date.
Before it was finally divided up into three cottages a further extension was added on to the rear of the kitchen addition.
