Monument record 1160/0/128 - Possible Saxon structures, Old Maltings

Please read our .

Summary

Archaeological evalaution at the Old Matlings site identified a series of probable postholes in two adjacent trenches. One contained pottery dating to the early-middle Saxon period, while the others may have dated to the 10th century. Another feature, possibly a pit, was identified in a trench to the north-west but so deeply buried it could not be safely accessed. The trenches were very small but demonstrated that Saxon deposits survive in this area, albeit deeply buried.

Full Description

{1} Beneath the post medieval layers within trench 2 four postholes were revealed at the current level of the water table. The postholes ranged in size from 0.30-0.60m diameter x 0.10-0.25m deep. From their fills two sherds of C10th St Neots ware were recovered along with animal bone fragments. A possible posthole was partially exposed in Trench 3, was found to be 0.19m deep and contained a single sherd of early middle Saxon pottery. In Trench 1, a pit was identified truncating the natural geology. It was so deeply buried that it could not be investigated, but is likely to be archaeological.
