Full Description

{1} Trial trench excavation was undertaken. Four trenches were excavated. An undated ditch and pit were recorded in Trench 4 though the ditch did produce a fragment of daub with a wattle impression. A further shallow pit produced fragments of 11th-century pottery. Two sets of substantial wall foundations were found, pottery from the backfill of the robbed out wall was dated to the 13th century. A hearthstone was found in the stone packing the centre of the wall. A large earthwork, thought to be related to other medieval earthworks in the vicinity, was found to be a large modern dump of clay and construction/ demolition debris. A sub-square levelled area in the north-eastern half of the site had a small linear earthwork around the perimeter and seems to be on a similar alignment to the walls. This could be described as a house or building platform.
