Monument record 1767/2/2 - Field boundaries

{1} The field systems continued in use, sometimes defined by stone walls. One of these merged into a boundary wall S and E of the villa.
The large Phase IIa (HER ref 1767/1/7) enclosure was cut by a pair of ditches, 11m and 12.5m long by 1.4m and 0.75m wide and 0.7m and 0.4m deep. Both had broad U shaped profiles. The smaller Phase Iia enclosure was cut by a ditch 1.54m wide and 0.3m deep with a wide U profile. All these features ran in parallel, NNE-SSW.
No features could be positively assigned to Phase lIc (mid-third to fourth century) on stratigraphic grounds alone in the paddock/field system at the east end. The ceramics, however, make it clear that some at least of these features continued in use well into the fourth century. It is likely that some of the Phase lIb boundary walls were also still standing.
