Full Description

{1} Trial trenching on land off islington in 2014 found evidence associated with low-density or transient occupation from the 12th to 13th centuries AD in three of the four trenches. Trench 1 contained a linear ditch or oval pit aligned north to south, terminating to the south. Trench 4 contained two intercutting postholes, a linear slot and a pit. There was an an oval pit towards the south-east end of Trench 3. Some 3m to the north-west of the pit was a very shallow hollow linear eroded feature 1.4m wide x 0.09m deep, with irregular sides and an uneven flattish base. It may have been the remains of a trackway. The fill contained a small sherd of pottery similar to pottery from the oval pit.

{2} Strip, map and sample excavation undertaken prior to the construction of housing found a large ditch aligned north-east to south-west, parallel to the modern road. A single sherd of middle Saxon Ipswich Ware, dating to the early 8th to mid-9th century and a piece of fired clay were found in the fill.

To the west of the ditch were two sets of intersecting gullies (one of which had previously been investigated in Trench 4), from which there were no further finds.
