Full Description

{1} Feature SP18. Fig.5.1. A scatter of postholes, gullies and irregular pits and hollows lay across an extensive area on the eastern part of the site. Some contained dumped burnt debris and small amounts of iron working slag, and slag was also recovered from the overlying graves. This, together with the hearth bottom from the nearby stone-lined pit indicates that the area was a centre for iron smithing in the early Saxon period. Charcoal from one pit has given a radiocarbon date of 540-690 Cal AD.
