Full Description

{3} Excavation of two medieval buildings, one possibly a barn. A well, oven and pits also revealed. Also medieval pot sherds covering a wide date range. Also roof tiles, ridge tiles, iron tongs & slag.

{5} Building development, roadworks, and extensions to the village school, made necessary a series of rescue excavations in the village of Isham, Northants. A Saxon manor, followed by the medieval manor, all well documented, produced interesting groups of pottery. Later occupation of the derelict site was represented by a few seventeenth century pots and a small bake-oven. On the opposite edge of the village, a scatter of Saxon and Medieval pottery was taken from the fringe of a second manor, also well documented.
Levelling for the new road line removed all but the lower traces of a cob-built cottage c.42ft long x 20ft wide. Its floor was of hard packed yellow sand, with four thin limestone slabs providing the central hearth. Beneath the floor were rubbish pits dug deep into the natural ironstone, some of which produced C12th pottery.
