Monument record 5908/0/11 - Romano-British Well & Adjacent Enclosure

{1} A stone-lined well and the remains of a small sub-rectangular enclosure were located in the central part of Field 3.
The well lining comprised 24 courses of roughly faced limestone blocks creating an internal diameter of 0.65m with a flat limestone slab forming the base at a depth of 2.3m. The whole well was set within a large sub-circular construction trench cut into the natural ironstone. The base contained silty clay, overlaid by a sticky clay that included the remains of a small horse or pony, which probably marked the demise of the well's use.
The enclosure or structure was c12m to the south-eats of the well. It was at least 9m x 4.5m and aligned north-west to south-east. It comprised linear U-shaped gullies and the north side was formed by a shallow U-shaped slot. There was no evidence of a side to the south-west.
