Full Description

{1} A wall foundation consisting of large rectangular blocks of sandstone formed the southern limit of excavation of Trench 1. It extended beyond the limit of excavation on both sides, but did not extend as far as geotechnical Test Pit 5. The wall foundation was 0.8m wide and survived to a height of 0.6m. Its eastern half was removed by machine during the evaluation.
A number of dump layers were built up against the wall ablove, on its northern side. One contained a complete bowl and stem fragment from a clay tobacco pipe (dated to c.1680-1710) and two sherds of post medieval pottery (C17th).
A probable contemporary cobblestone pavement was situated to the north of the wall.
C19th terracing with backyards incorporates a walkway between the plots, which may explain the cobbled surface. The substantial sandstone wall probably represents the northern wall of a tannery shown on 1920s OS maps.
