Full Description
{1} The edge of a possible pit was observed cutting the clay substrate in Trench 6 but flooding prevented further investigation of this feature.
A sequence of deposits overlay the clay substrate which appeared to be original land surface. Only small fragments of oyster shell were found within the subsoil and buried topsoil layers. Overlying this was a band of sandy gravel which possibly formed a path or the edge of a gravelled area.
This in turn was sealed by C19th/early C20th soil layers which were clearly deposited following the construction of the boundary wall to the north-east. Further gravel surface was then laid down, probably for a metalled yard area, which appeared to be cut by a narrow, vertically-sided trench, possibly a drain or a wall foundation trench.
