Full Description

{1} Trench 12 revealed an extensive layer of clean gravel which probably fills the hollow of the former ditch that once skirted the south side of the motte. It was probably laid to provide a sound base for the construction of a probable limestone rubble boundary wall. This was aligned perpendicular to the existing C19th buildings to its east, implying that it is of a similar date. At some time later a surface of limestone cobbles was laid to the south of the wall.
