Full Description

{1} The earliest deposit was uncovered in the north-wets of Trench 4 and areas of Trenches 7 and 8, and was only observed where the foundation trenches were slightly deeper than average. Sherds of C2nd to C4th Roman pottery were recovered from it. It is likely that the layer is consistent across the site and may be the same as that observed within the 1997 watching brief by Morris & Parry.
The current excavations did not have the depth required to uncover posisble Roman features and layers that may be related to those revealed in the excavations to the north (Jackson & Morris, 1991).
