Full Description

{1} The Cricketers’ Arms on Hervey Street is located within the Northampton Boot and Shoe Quarter and Conservation Area. The area was heavily dominated by the boot and shoe industry during the C18th and C19th, through to the C20th. The roads and houses in the area followed a regimented pattern of terraced houses and factories. Shops and pubs such as The Cricketers’ Arms, and the Crispin on nearby Russell Street were also built to serve the workers.
A plot of land on Hervey Street was bought by Pickering Phipps in 1878, probably the site of this public house, which was a Phipps Brewery pub. The 1881 census lists a William Cordley at the pub. In 1884 a W.M.C. Gubbins is listed in Wrights Directory. In 1894 Kellys Directory lists Joseph Potter as a “beer retailer”; his name is shown on an historic photograph of the building. The building is shown on First Edition OS mapping, but not annotated as a public house.
The layout of the building and its spacious courtyard with adjoining passageway suggests that it was intended and built as a public house.
Details of the building, plans, photographs etc. and a building assessment p.4-15.
The survey has shown that the Cricketers’ Arms was conceived and built as a Public House in the late C19th to serve the flourishing boot and shoe industry of the area. The building retains some of the original street façade as shown on a historic photograph. Evidence for some internal alterations such as the removal of a ground floor wall and fireplace can be seen. Very few original features survive in the building due to cosmetic alterations and upgrading of the property.
