Full Description

{1} The only feature in Trench 2 was a large irregular shaped pit 3.0m wide x 0.24m deep, with a light grey silty clay fill. It contained Roman pottery dating to the late C1st to C2nd.

{2} A 10m x 10m trench was excavated around the pit and it was fully excavated. A number of sherds of pottery from two similar vessels or a single vessel of small collared urn were found in the pit fills. Although these vessels are often found as accessory vessels to cremation burials, no evidence for cremated human remains were found.

[There was no discussion of the discrepancy in the dating of the pit between the two phases of archaeological investigation].
