Full Description

{1} A small complex of roughly parallel ditches was present in the western part of the site, aligned roughly east-west. All contained early Romano-British pottery along with very small amounts of slag, and had been filled naturally. The space between the ditches at their easternmost limit is 5.5m, progressively becoming narrower westward.
A pit within the space between Ditches 11 and 12 was undated and had a scorched base and charcoaly basal fill indicating in-situ burning. Positioned between the northern and central Ditches 8 and 10, were two further small, undated pits.
Pottery from the ditches comprised Roman greywares, shelly fabric, mixed with grog-tempered pottery, including a cordoned jar.
The ditches may form some sort of agricultural feature or even part of a kitchen garden associated with the villa.

Demarcating the western limit of the parallel linear ditches was a 20m long, curving, north-south orientated ditch which contained pottery. A further 5.5m long ditch lay parallel to this. Among the more complete vessels found in the ditch were a narrow-necked cordoned jar in grog and shell fabric, and another cordoned jar in orange oxidised fabric. Both were recovered from the ditch terminal, perhaps suggesting placement of the vessels.
