Full Description
{1} What may have been a trapezoidal ditched enclosure (43m x 40m) was cut into the flattish valley bottom at the base of the south-facing slope, in the south-east part of Area 2. Sections across the ditches revealed a consistent U-shaped profile. The western side of the enclosure appeared to have been left open.
One of the ditches appeared to extend further south-eastwards, but this could not be confirmed beneath an unstripped bund between the excavation areas.
Aligned parallel to the northwest of the enclosure was an 18m long length of ditch also with a U-shaped profile. It is possible that the ditch represents an earlier phase of the trapezoidal enclosure.
Positioned between the two parallel ditches was a vertical sided circular pit with a flat base, 1.3m in diameter. Late Iron Age pottery was recovered from its fill. A group of similarly dated pits (PG 57) was present in the north-eastern corner of the enclosure.
Ditches to the south-east may mark a continuation of the enclosure ditches in this general direction, extending towards the site of the villa.
{2} The base of an undated shallow truncated curvilinear ditch was exposed in the eastern half of Trench 20, along with a pit; the latter contained a sherd of undated pottery.
