Full Description
{1} Several groups of pits in addition to those associated with the trapezoidal enclosures have been attributed to the Early Romano-British period.
Area 1 was characterised by a broad distribution of large pits and quarrying hollows, many of which were un-datable. Towards the northern part of Area 1 were 14 pits ranging in size from 1.88m in diameter to 6.38m long x 3m wide. Of the seven excavated three contained early Romano-British material, along with slag. The largest pit contained substantial amounts of industrial waste, including a hearth bottom. The original function of the pits is unclear, some possibly as quarries, and some may have been dug originally as wells.
Several further groups of pits were also observed in Area 2, their dimension and form varying considerably, however all appear to have been deliberately backfilled, thus suggesting that they became waste dumps.
Several pits and postholes on the site remain undated, although it is likely that they fit either into the late Iron Age or early Romano-British periods.
