Full Description

{1} Two C17th-C18th features within the trench comprised a pit and a wall in a construction trench.
A stone wall ran east-west on a line with the High Street frontage. The wall had a construction cut and a fill on the south side, but not the north side. The construction cut was vertical and at least 0.5m deep, although it could not be bottomed within the restrictions of the trench.
The wall was c.0.5m wide and excavated to a depth of 0.4m. It was constructed of large roughly squared stone blocks facing north and south, with a core of brick and stone. This was probably a cellar wall. A single sherd of 1550-1700 AD pottery was found within the clay bonding.
The pit was 1.35m x 1.3m x 0.55m deep. It yielded 3 sherds of pottery suggesting a late C17th or early C18th backfilling.
The wall is probably that of a cellar, the remains of a post medieval building which once stood on the frontage of the site. This is certainbly the remains of buildings illustrated on the 1781 Inclosure Award.
