Full Description

List Entry Description
Summary of Building
First World War memorial, with later additions for the Second World War.
Reasons for Designation
Stoke Albany War Memorial, which stands south of the Church of St Botolph, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design: a well-executed limestone memorial, echoing a medieval market or churchyard cross;
* Group value: with the Grade II*-listed Church of St Botolph and Grade II-listed Village Hall and Attached House.
History
The war memorial was probably erected during the first phase of memorialisation in the 1920s, to
commemorate the men of the village who had died whilst fighting during the First World War. It was funded by public subscription. Details for the Second World War were added at a later date. Repairs, funded by the War Memorials Trust, were carried out in 2010.
Details
The memorial stands at the north end of the village, on a green on the approach to the Church of St Botolph (listed Grade II*), by the former village school (now the Village Hall, Grade II-listed). Of limestone and c5m tall overall, it comprises a shallow, three-tier, octagonal base supporting a square plinth. A square-sectioned shaft rises from this at the head of which is a lantern with the monogram HIS carved in low relief on two opposing sides, and a wheel-head cross carved on the others. A ball finial is to the top.
On the south (front) face of the plinth is carved in raised lettering IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE
WHO/ FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919; to the west side is FOR GOD & COUNTRY/ FOR
HONOUR & FREEDOM; to the east are the 8 names of those who fell, with those 3 lost in the Second World War added beneath with the dates 1939 1945; to the north THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE.
