Full Description
{1} Two shallow gullies and a pit were positively dated to the late Saxon-early medieval period. A number of other, similar, features, although undated, are likely to be contemporary.
Although it is hard to define the exact nature of the activity on the site, there seems to be evidence for some Saxon – early medieval activity characterised by small individual features perhaps on the outskirts of the main areas of activity. These pits, gullies and post-holes are located within the southern area of the enclosures/platforms of the Scheduled Monument and on a similar alignment . The presence of the spindle whorl points to domestic activities such as spinning taking place in the 9th – 10th centuries, but the features that could possibly be assigned to this phase are mostly
shallow with little dating evidence. Animal bone from pits [35] and [37] included cattle, sheep and horse, pig and chicken suggestive of the usual domestic waste with no evidence for wild animals.
