Full Description

{1} An undated ditch was found during the trial trench excavation. The feature was aligned NNW-SSE, 2.40m wide and up to 0.36m deep. This contained a single fill of mid brown clay-silt with frequent plated limestone. Animal bone was recovered from within this material, but the sample was considered too small to provide meaningful information on animal husbandry and utilisation.

While the ditch could date from any period, it is on a similar alignment to Romano-British ditches identified by aerial photography on the northern side of Sulehay Road.

{2} Subsequent targeted excavation during groundworks expoed the ditch. A single sherd of late Iron Age/early Roman pottery, an iron artefact and animal bone was recovered.
