SUMMARY OF BUILDING
First World War memorial, 1920, with later additions for the Second World War.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION
Milton Malsor War Memorial, erected in 1920, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design: an elegant limestone cross;
* Architect: by the leading Northamptonshire architect J A Gotch.

HISTORY
The memorial to the men of Milton Malsor who fell in the First World War was unveiled by General Lord Horne on 17 July 1920. It was designed by the architect J A Gotch (1852-1942) of Kettering.

DETAILS
DESCRIPTION: the war memorial stands on the village green on the south side of High Street. Of Weldon stone, it is a c 4m high cross on a tapering shaft which rises from a relatively small, square, plinth. This is inscribed in raised lettering TO KEEP IN MIND THOSE/ WHO FROM THIS PLACE/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914-1919. The names of those who died are recorded on the other three sides of the plinth. A sloping tablet was added to the front of the memorial after the Second World War with the names of those lost in that conflict. A second tablet, to the left side of the memorial, records the village’s Second-War contributions to the Northampton General Hospital memorial.
Pursuant to s.1 (5A) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 (‘the Act’) it is declared that the low post and chain fence which surrounds the memorial is not of special interest and is excluded from the listing.
