Full Description

{1} An L-plan leather and machinery warehouse on the south side of Abington Street. Listed by 1893 as Stimpson Bros, shoe mercers. The 1899 OS 1:2,500 map shows a street range with workshops and stores extending to the rear along the west side of a yard; a two-storey range on the west side appears to be the remains of this range.
The three-storey, five-bay frontage has a modern shop front, although an arched entrance leading to the rear is original. Above, the elevation uses red-brick with painted stone string-courses at sill, transom and lintel level. The same material is also used for window surrounds, heads, broken pediments and mullions. The second and fourth window bays project and have rubbed-brick pilasters with regular bands of painted stone. The gables of these two bays also have these bands. The other bays have oculi on the top floor. To the rear orange brick is used and there is no decoration.

Stimpsons moved to premises on Billing Road in 1961. In 1999 the premises were an amusement arcade to the front and a diner to the rear.

{2} Buildings formerly on this plot were used as a school, Abington House School, operating between 1855 and 1871.
