Full Description

{1} The congregation, originally regarded as Presbyterian, was formed in the late 17th century and a meeting house seating 400 which was erected on a leasehold site c1694. The present building, which superseded the former on the expiry of the lease, c1794, has brick walls in Flemish bond with dark headers and a hipped slate roof. It was enlarged to the W in the early 19th century. The original S front has one tall round-arched window between two doorways, one of which to the W was replaced by a second window when the chapel was enlarged. The N wall has two similar windows in the older part flanking the former site of the pulpit. The gabled W wall of the extension has three upper lunettes and a single window below. The interior has a gallery in the W extension. The pulpit, re-sited on a later rostrum at the E end, is of the early19th century; other fittings are later. Monument: in chapel, Rev Joseph Whitehead, over 23 years pastor, 1816, 'such was his success as to render it necessary greatly to enlarge this place of worship'.
