Monument record 8320/0/19 - Area of medieval and post-medieval features

An undated ditch and pit predating the ridge and furrow earthworks were found during trial trenching and a pit, possibly a tree throw, and a post-medieval surface were found during subsequent investigation

{1} A narrow ditch, aligned east to west, and 0.75m wide and 0.10m deep. A pit or possible ditch terminal was also found. Neither feature was dated or contained any finds.

{2} A strip, map and sample excavation undertaken in 2017 found an irregular pit containing a single abraded sherd of medieval pottery dating to the 12th century. It is possible that it represents the remains of an uprooted tree or natural feature.

A possible surface, defined by a linear spread of gravel aligned north-east to south-west, was identified in the centre of the site. There were wheel ruts in the surface of the spread, which measured 2.60m wide, 0.20m deep and extended for a length of at least 10m. A small quantity of bone and late 17th-century pottery were recovered from the feature. The feature roughly corresponds to the route of a footpath recorded on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map onwards.
