Summary

A brewery founded in 1806 by J Cockerill who was succeeded by William Minards until 1835 when it was acquired by James Lilly. In 1866, it was sold to W.J East and the brewery experienced a period of expansion and in 1879 it was rebuilt. The brewery was further modernised under the ownership of Herbert East from 1880. A new brewhouse was built in 1888. Phipps Northampton Brewery Company acquired the business from East Brothers in 1892, and in 1906 was closed. Full Description

{1} The brewery was founded in 1806 by J Cockerill. He was succeeded by William Minards until 1835 when it was acquired by James Lilly. In 1866, it was sold to W.J East and the brewery experienced a period of expansion and in 1879 it was rebuilt. The brewery was further modernised under the ownership of Herbert East from 1880. A new brewhouse was built in 1888.

Phipps Northampton Brewery Company acquired the business from East Brothers in 1892, and in 1906 was closed. The brewery subsequently been used as a furniture store. It was converted into offices during the late 1990s.

{2} The former Hope Brewery, now converted to offices. In 1892 Phipps Northampton Brewery Company acquired the business from East Brothers. In 1906 NBC it was closed moving production to Northampton, Bridge Street, now the site of the Carlsberg brewery.

{3} East’s Hope Brewery at Milton Malsor, where a new brewhouse was built in 1888, is also now in office use.

{4} Hope Brewery stood on the north side of the Greyhound pub.

The Hope Brewery and the Greyhound pub appear to have been part of the same terrace of buildings.
