Please read our .

Summary

A series of gullies and ditches dating from the late Saxon to the post-medieval periods and likely defining a series of plot boundaries were observed during development of the site. Further archaeological investigation undertaken immediately to the west in 2018 identified medieval features dating between the 10th and 13th centuries.

Full Description

{1} Archaeological observation was undertaken during the development of the site. A ditch aligned north to south was later truncated by a gully on the same alignment. They contained pottery dating from the late Saxon period to the 13th century. To the north-east was a further gully, aligned east to west, which also contained 12th to 13th century pottery. These may have formed the corner of a plot.

Several post-medieval gullies were also found, most on a similar north to south alignment. These may be related to remodelling and landscaping after Horton House was demolished in the 17th century. The site was wooded in the late 19th century.

{2} Archaeological excavation was undertaken in August 2018 on land adjacent to No 7 Captain's Court (directly east of the parish church). At least two phases of medieval activity were revealed. Several ditches, dating to the 10th-11th century, may be boundary ditches around the early medieval village core, or perhaps demarcating the edges of ecclesiastical land around the church. Subsequent activity (12th-13th century) comprised cobbled surfaces, possible wall fragments, shallow ditches and pits and demolition layers, possibly the remanants of buildings and/or trackways.
