Description
{1} Supervised stripping and excavation was undertaken during groundworks in August 2018 on land adjacent to No 7 Captain's Court (directly east of the parish church of St Mary Magdalene). The work revealed medieval activity, likely to be the remains of part of the medieval village settlement. At least two phases of medieval activity were identified. Several ditches represent the earliest phase of activity (possibly 10th-11th century) and may be boundary ditches around the early medieval village core, or perhaps demarcating the edges of ecclesiastical land around the church. The later phase (dated to the 12th-13th century) consisted of cobbled surfaces, possible wall fragments, shallow ditches and pits and demolition layers, possibly the remnants of buildings and/or trackways.
