Monument record 4072/0/26 - Early medieval occupation and post-medieval agricultural features

A group of 12th and 13th century occupation features, possibly associated with backplots of former tenements. During the post-medieval period the site appears to have been a field

{1} A strip, map and sample excavation at 31 Green Lane, Wootton found evidence of medieval occupation. The earliest phase dated to the 12th century. A north-south aligned gully was likely used for drainage. A ditch/pit contained St Neots Ware, shelly coarseware, medieval roof tile and a piece of slag indicating the presence of buildings and possibly metal working nearby. Charred seeds included free-threshing wheat.

Continued occupation into the 13th century included a single posthole from a possible structure or fence line. A dump of limestone and ironstone contained further medieval roof tiles and iron nails and may have been a demolition deposit. A substantial ditch aligned approximately north-west to south-east may have been a property boundary extending back from Green Lane.

Historic maps indicate that the area was an enclosed rectangular field in the post-medieval period. A stone-lined drain and ephemeral remains of a stone wall appear likely to date to this period.
