Monument record 4332/0/6 - Area of medieval settlement to the west of Blueberry Close, Maidwell

An area of medieval settlement identified during trial trench excavation and situated on the western edge of the modern village. The main phase of activity was probably during the 13th to 15th centuries

{1} Trial trench excavation found evidence for medieval/post-medieval settlement on the western edge of the modern village. The trench furthest west contained no features and had been excavated through an earthwork bank which may have been a former headland associated with the medieval field system, indicating that the land immediately to the west lay within the open fields.

Wall foundations and rubble spreads were found in four trenches. A possible hearth lay within one of the buildings and fragments of a quern were found in another suggesting that at least some were of domestic origin. The rubble spreads possibly represent yard surfaces, building platforms or collapse and demolition debris. Ditches found in one of the trenches may be former property boundaries.

A complete medieval ring brooch was in one of the walls and an iron two pronged fork or goad was recovered from one of the rubble spreads. The small amount of animal bone found on site was in poor condition, although the metalwork was very well preserved. Single sherds of residual Roman and Saxon pottery were also recovered.
