Full Description

{1} Two trenches were excavated at Cross Farm in 2013. A substantial ditch, aligned east-west and up to 6m wide, was observed in both trenches. Pottery dating from the 12th to the 14th centuries was found in the ditch fill and it is likely to be a plot boundary extending back from Old Road. Several other smaller ditches dating to the same period may be subdivisions within the plots.

{2} The alignment of the plot boundary and the greater density of features in the eastern part of the suggest that these remains are associated with backyard activity to the rear of dwellings that fronted onto Old Road. Evidence of grain drying on the site was also found.
