Full Description

{1} The trench for the new pipeline exposed sections of the footings of an ironstone wall which previously formed the eastern elevation of a substantial house which was partially demolished in the mid-19th century as part of a road-widening scheme. The house has a well-documented history and may date to the medieval period.

{2} Mistakenly identified as The Red Lion. Known as Crane's Farmhouse in 1738. A deed dated to 1495 names William Crane and which may refer to this property. Half the property was demolished in the 1960s to widen West Street. During the renovation of Tudor Cottage, in the early 1980s, an old archway was revealed that looked like a carriage entrance to what might have been the yard behind the house.

{3} House constructed of ironstone. Part rendered. Originally extended further to the north-east. On its north-east gable there is a large stepped chimney stack at the base of which are the remains of an internal fire place with wooden lintel. Documentary evidence suggests that there was a building on the plot in the 1490s.
