Full Description

[1} Row of tenements was built in the 18th century on land belonging to Christchurch College. They conform closely to standard Northamptonshire vernacular of that era. Chimney in each gable end. Probably originally thatched as indicated by kneelers on the stone gable cappings, confirmed by a document of 1844. Documentary evidence shows that they were extensively renovated in 1837-44; soon after none retained thatch.

One plot was excavated in 2004. There was an cellar accessed by a flight of steps which turned an ash-pit at the southern end. The cellar walls and floors were of ironstone- and pottery and bottle glass dated it to the 19th century.
The souther half of the tenement appears to have been one room which contained the remains of an inglenook fireplace occupying half the south wall. To the rear of the house were a series of rubbish pits, which was ended by the construction of a well. Two other wells lay further back in the garden.
