Full Description

{1} Trial trench excavation undertaken to locate a culvert in order to establish its date, depth of construction and condition. The culvert was located at 1.5m below current ground level. Overlying soils displayed evidence of tip lines suggesting that the ground had been raised, suggesting that the culvert had been constructed within a larger depression and then covered. Finds from the layer immediately overlying the culvert included medieval decorated encaustic floor tiles, architectural fragments and pottery dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. The culvert had ironstone sides and a shallowly-arched brick vault; the bricks probably dated to no earlier than the mid-19th century.
