Building record MNN170829 - Range of modern barns, Main Road

A range of barns dating from the at least the late 19th century. Formerly adjacent to a quarry, one of the buildings was labelled as a limekiln in 1886.

{1} The main building, the barn, is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and comprises a large central space with small annexes on the east and west sides. The eastern annexe, possibly a stable, has since collapsed. A stone trough lay within this building. The western annexe was not accessible, but was probably a pig sty. At the rear is a north-south range comprising a stone wall on the east side and a corrugated iron structure covering the remainder. Probably originating as a cart shed, the metalwork is a later repair. The structure has been partially buried by quarry spoil. Much of the roofing is of corrugated iron, apart from the western annexe where the roof is of Collyweston slate.

The remains of the outbuilding to the south-west are in a considerable state of dilapidation and form a small portion of the building that originally stood on the site which was referred to as a limekiln. There is no evidence that this part of the building was used as a limekiln but, as much of the building has been demolished any evidence may only survive as buried remains beneath spoil to the east of the extant building.
