Full Description

{1} The building was predominantly constructed of brick and had originally been thatched, this being concealed beneath corrugated metal sheeting. The main load bearing structural members had comprised five queen post trusses each supported on two wall posts, bedded within a coursed rubble sandstone plinth. This arrangement only survived largely intact on the south-west elevation. The walls on the remaining elevations had largely been reconstructed when a first floor was added. The panels always seem to have had brick infilling rather than lath and plaster. Internal partition of lath and plaster possibly part of the original structure. Probably last quarter of the 17th century or even the first quarter of the 18th century, as such this building illustrates one of the last stages timber framed structures reached before being completely superseded by brick; plan, elevation and sections.

{2} Two photographs of the L-shaped range of barns. The range is of two-storeys and is timber-framed construction with brick and ?cob infill. Decorated barge-boards on the gables and corrugated iron roof covering. The windows are boarded up in 1963, so possibly demolished shortly afterwards. The boundary wall onto the High Street is still extant.
