Summary

Finds of fired clay and Iron Age pottery during fieldwalking survey prompted a small-scale excavation in 1982, revealing the base of an oven/kiln constructed of stone. Evidence of the fired clay superstructure was also found.

Full Description

{1} In March 1982, whilst fieldwalking, a concentrated group of finds including burnt clay, fired clay and Iron Age pottery were found. A 2mx2.5m area was excavated over the concentration, revealing the base of a domestic Iron Age oven, constructed of pebbles and limestone blocks, packed with heat-reddened clay. The oven cover was constructed with a network of withies, plastered over with clay and fired hard.
