Monument record 5228/0/1 - Site of probable prehistoric activity, Hardwick Road
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Archaeological evaluation identified a north-south aligned feature from which two worked flints, comprising a flake and a plano-convex knife, as well as fragments of animal bone were recovered. The knife is of a type which was in use from the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age periods. A further, undated, ditch was identified in a trench to the north. Subsequent excavation to define the prehistoric feature did not identify anything other than a post-medieval field boundary.

Full Description
{1} Archaeological evaluation of land adjacent to Hardwick Road identified two ditches, both aligned north-south, in separate trenches. The southern ditch, which was very shallow, contained a flint flake and plano-convex knife, a tool type that was in use from the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age periods and is often recovered in association with Collared Urns. A partial cattle molar was also recovered. No finds were recovered from the ditch to the north, although its similar alignment suggests that it may be contemporary.
{2} Archaeological investigation was undertaken to further define the prehistoric feature but nothing corresponding with the ditch recorded during the previous evaluation was identified during the excavation. A single post-medieval ditch aligned north-south was found. The ditch is probably part of a field system created after enclosure;
