Full Description
{1} Former mill and mill house. A mill is mentioned in Domesday Book; in 1574 (NRO, W(A) XVI.5) and 1706 (NRO, W(A) 2.IV.5) two mills are recorded in the village. The present building is early 18th-century and comprised a mill and class 4a mill house, all under one roof. The two parts were combined in 1936 (Brassey letter 1940, at Apethorpe Hall). The door jambs are incised with dates including 1732, 1733, 1737. The bridge to the south with a single unchamfered arch, is later than the house.
{2} On Willow Brook; c 1732 new mill erected; 1936 mill and mill-house combined; c1970 mill in derelict state when sold by Lord Brassey.
The watercourses have been, and continue to be, altered considerably. The former mill is at the south-west of the range of single storey with attic buildings. The breast-shot wheel was outside the gable end of the mill which used to be weather-boarded but is now of stone with a horizontal rectangular window for the attic and double glass doors in the first storey approximately at the position of the waterwheel shaft. The gable roof is of Collyweston slate with a central hipped dormer, and a single flue stone chimney stack on the ridge at the north-east end.
The former mill cottage adjoins the mill. It also is of single storey, although the roof is of a slightly different pitch.
