Full Description

{1} Archaeolgical excavation of a wider Iron Age and Roman settlement identified two adjacent pits dating to the early Neolithic period. The pits were situated only 0.30m apart; no other contemporary features were identified. The upper fill of one of the pits contained 12 sherds of hand-made pottery and 54 pieces of flint which included debitage as well as tools including blades, arrowheads and four flakes from axes. A sample taken from this deposit contained large quantities of charcoal probably derived from domestic hearth waste. A radiocarbon date of the early Neolithic (3631-3373 cal BC - 4710 +/- 30 BP, 95% confidence; Beta-479939) was obtained from the charcoal. The upper fill of the adjacent pit contained 8 early Neolithic pottery sherds and four worked flints. Five wheel-finished Roman pottery sherds were considered to be intrusive from the later enclosure system.
