Summary

Plans for the new prison at Onley were drawn up in the early 1960s and construction was in progress by 1963 although it did not open until 1968. Onley is one of 22 "New Wave" prisons erected in the 1960s, the first of these being HMP Blundeston which opened in 1963. At Blundeston four four-storied T-plan wings were attached to the four corners of a central common service block. At Onley and Albany, the earliest examples of the revised design, the wings are attached to a long range which houses the education department and a wider corridor which is naturally lit. However, the disadvantage is that the corridor also has to act as a trolly route from the kitchen to the dining rooms attached to each wing. The compactness of the original concept of the New Wave prison has been modified in what appears to be an attempt to provide a more effective design. A new wing was completed in November 1975. In the early 1990s a Bedford Unit (Directorate of Works I) accommodation block was added. It is linked to the rest of the prison by a corridor similiar in design to one at Featherstone.
