Full Description

{1} (Listed as 18 Wantage Road) This small two-storey building is located on the south side of Wantage Road. The differences in ridge height suggest that it consists of three separate structures: two single-bay workshops, facing onto an alley that runs behind houses facing Roseholme Road to the west, added to the rear of the larger workshop with a narrow gabled north elevation on Wantage Road. All three elements were present by 1898 (OS). The larger workshop has been extensively re-worked as a house with new windows and sills. The smaller workshops have also been remodelled in various ways but one retains what could be an original west-facing first-floor window with a cast-iron frame and a blue-brick sill. The small size of this frame and the orientation of the range suggests that it would be too poorly lit for a workshop, and no leather-trades use (either under Wantage Road or Roseholme Road) has been identified for this site.
