Building record 1160/0/290 - 76 & 78 Artizan Road, Northampton

This building is a two storey, five bay, mid-terrace, brick built, boot and shoe factory situated on the east side of Artizan Road. It is of a T shaped plan and has a pillastered entrance in the southern bay.

{1} This building is a two-storey boot and shoe factory situated on the east side of Artizan Road. It has a T shaped plan with the stem of the ‘T’ forming a rear range. The front elevation consists of five narrow window bays. The entrance, in the slightly wider southernmost bay, has a simple surround and leads directly to stairs to the first floor. There is a single window above the entrance, but elsewhere the openings are paired. The northernmost of the first-floor openings was originally a loading doorway. The ground-floor windows have segmental heads with brick drip moulds and the first-floor windows have flat arched heads. All the windows
have stone sills, the central pairs sharing a single sill. The ground-floor central pair has castiron frames, but on the first floor the frames are of timber; it is possible that both types are original. The gable stacks service the terraced houses on each side.
In plan the interior of the front range is offset to the north to allow for the stairs to the first floor. The rear range extends back three bays and is central to the building. There is a window in the rear of the front range on the northern side and two windows on each side of the rear range. The first floor is supported on cast-iron columns, three placed centrally to each range. The beams which rest on these are chamfered and are supported at the walls on brick corbels.
The first floor has further cast iron columns and chamfered beams on brick corbels which support a king-post roof. There is a further loading doorway in the centre of the rear wall of the rear range.
