Full Description

{1} This three-storey boot and shoe factory on the east side of Artizan Street has a street elevation of thirteen bays. The eight bays to the north represent the original factory. The principal entrance was probably in the northernmost bay, which has been remodelled. The first-floor loading doorway was in the southernmost bay, where it is marked out by a lower head than the windows. The first- and second-floor windows have a continuous stone lintel band topped on the first floor by a small cornice, and on the second by a deeper eaves cornice. There were probably sill bands on each floor, though on the first floor a modern fascia conceals the sills. The windows have been altered but a number, chiefly on the second floor, retain four-pane opening top-lights. On the street elevation the gables have moulded stone kneelers.
The five bay extension to the south, built before 1899, is similar stylistically, but utilises a lighter-coloured brick. The bonded junction between the two phases is marked by a line of closers. The addition, which has three basement windows and a basement taking-in hatch, also has a further entrance in the southernmost bay, and a large ridge-mounted louvre. Extensive rear ranges, present by 1899, were not seen.
