Full Description

{1} Listed as 18-20 Henry Street. This building is a three-storey boot and shoe factory with five wide bays to the north-facing street elevation. This has stone detailing, including moulded bands at storey and sill level, and moulded kneelers; the eaves cornice is of moulded brick. There are entrances in both end bays, the western one having an elaborate limestone surround with an eared architrave and an entablature incorporating a small triangular pediment. The east entrance has no surround and a simple segmental head. The large windows have either segmental (ground floor) or cambered heads and their original fenestration. The ground-floor windows have cast-iron frames and the first and second floors have tripartite horned sashes; all the windows have central opening top-lights. The second-floor windows are not as tall as the first. The second-floor loading doorway is in the second bay from the east, and incorporates narrow side-lights beneath an overall cambered head. The western ground-floor window has been replaced by a large entrance.
To the rear the Goad plans show a two-bay three-storey rear range, placed roughly centrally and extending as far as a single-storey lasting and machine shop against the plot boundary. There is also a full-height rear privy tower against the eastern end of the street range. These ranges were not seen, but are shown on the 1985 OS 1:1250 map. All were present by 1899, plus a number of other minor structures.
