Full Description

{1} This shoe factory stands on a corner site, with its long elevation to Magee Street on the east and a short office front to Turner Street on the south. To the rear (north) there was a small yard. The building has an L-plan and consists of two storeys over a poorly lit basement or cellar, and ten by three bays with a moulded brick eaves course. The basement or cellar is indicated by hatches at the north end of the east elevation. The windows on the principal storeys have cambered arches and stone sills. On the east elevation they have cast-iron frames, while on the south side they mostly have timber sashes denoting, in part at least, office functions: the westernmost first-floor window has glass etched with the word ‘OFFICE’. The entrance, at basement level, occupies the west bay of the south front; above it, probably lighting a stair, is the sole iron-framed window on this elevation. Taking-in was via a first-floor doorway in the north gable, overlooking the yard, where an crane remains. There is a small stack on this gable.

{2} This shoe factory consists of two storeys over a basement and has ten by three bays. It was built in the late 1880s. This shoe factory was occupied by a succession of different manufacturers.
