Full Description
{1} This former cinema, probably built in 1919 to designs by Alexander Ellis Anderson, incorporates eight or nine bays of a shoe factory dating from circa 1880, judging by the existence of a series of blocked segmental-headed windows in the Alcombe Road elevation. The cinema has a gabled front to Grove Road on the east in a late Edwardian baroque style. It was extended after 1924 over the sites of Nos. 113-19 (odd) Alcombe Road, a series of terraced houses; some Art-Deco details may date from this phase, including remains of the name: ‘[Su]per [Cin]ema’. The east gable appears to have been rebuilt subsequently.
