Full Description

{1} This boot and shoe factory, standing on the junction of Hood Street and Shakespeare Road, consists of three storeys and a basement. The main entrance is on the three-bay south elevation onto Hood Street, and there is a works entrance in the west-facing Shakespeare Road elevation in the northernmost of the eight bays. All windows have keyed segmental heads and plain sandstone sills. The plinth, which is of blue brick, is interrupted by the basement windows and has a chamfered top course. Both street elevations are rendered above the plinth, but an elaborate polychrome brick eaves cornice is visible above the render. The main entrance has panelled pilaster jambs carrying a simple entablature. There is a loading doorway with an iron crane on the first floor, above the works entrance. Much of the original cast-iron fenestration survives but four ground-floor windows (two onto Hood Street and two at the southern end of Shakespeare Road) are sashed and may indicate the position of an office. At the northern end of the Shakespeare Road elevation there is a two-storey extension, also incorporating a basement. This was added before 1899. In its present rendered form it matches the rest of the elevation and its roof cuts across a gable window in the original
building. This extension has a rear double-flued stack.
