Full Description

{1} Archaeological building recording survey was undertaken in 2019 prior to conversion to a residential property. A number of entries in Kelly’s Commercial Directories (for instance 1894 and 1906) make it clear that the building was constructed in 1861 and was designed to seat 200. The earlier entry of the two indicates that it was built as a Congregational Chapel. By 1906 it was simply called ‘Union Chapel’ with a union of the Baptist and Congregational Chapels in 1902. A schoolroom had been added to the rear by 1884. In 1925, a large renovation project was undertaken. Costing a sum of about £500, and put out to tender, this included new floor, new fixed pews, walls panelled to six feet height, semi-circular pews for the choir on a platform, new pulpit, new lamps and a new outside porch. The chapel closed in 2006 and was sold in 2009.
