Monument record 3462/2 - Probable Iron Age/Roman enclosure, east of Mere Farm

A probable Iron Age and/or Roman rectilinear ditched enclosure is recorded as cropmarks on EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken in July 2011. It probably indicates the site of a settlement. It measures about 40 metres by 20 metres.

{1} A probable Iron Age and/or Roman rectilinear ditched enclosure is recorded as cropmarks on EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken in July 2011. It probably indicates the site of a settlement. It measures about 40 metres by 20 metres and is centred at TL 0200 7130.

As described at {1} above, the right-angled trapezoidal shaped ditched enclosure of probable Iron Age or Roman date is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Bedford Borough NMP project. Located in the field immediately SE of Mere Farm and centred at TL 02004 71332, the up to 3.8 metres wide ditch encloses an area about 37.5 x 27 metres at its widest. From the NW corner it is possible that a 2.8 metres wide ditch extends 4.5 metres W.
